Protests to focus on doctor who performed 60,000 abortions

August 30, 2009 · 1 Comment

If LeRoy Carhart’s abortion clinic had a terror alert scale, it would be at Code Red this weekend.

Anti-abortion protesters plan demonstrations this weekend outside Dr. LeRoy Carhart's clinic in Bellevue, Nebraska.

“I feel safer on an airplane than I do in my clinic,” Carhart said, sitting at his desk in his windowless office in Bellevue, Nebraska.

“You try to think about every way an attack could happen. You try to do all you can to prevent it, but obviously Dr. [George] Tiller thought he was safe in church.”

It’s been nearly three months since Tiller, one of the world’s most well-known doctors performing abortions, was shot in the head at point-blank range on May 31 as services began at Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita, Kansas.

Anti-abortion groups, led by Operation Rescue, plan to launch protests outside Carhart’s clinic this weekend in Bellevue, just south of Omaha. They will be the first major anti-abortion protests since the Tiller killing.

The demonstrations are set to culminate Saturday with so-called Truth Trucks — delivery trucks with giant rolling billboards of dismembered fetuses on the sides — parking outside Carhart’s clinic and canvassing area neighborhoods. Protesters carrying anti-abortion signs also are expected.

Operation Rescue President Troy Newman has vowed a peaceful demonstration and said that any hints of possible violence are ginned up by what he calls left-wing groups and the liberal media.

His group scaled down plans to protest at Carhart’s facility Friday when it learned women’s rights groups, including the National Organization for Women, would be there. Operation Rescue will hold a rally at a church instead Friday.

“Operation Rescue has said Dr. Carhart is the next target …,” said Katherine Spillar, executive vice president with the Feminist Majority Foundation. “We fear that these kinds of activities can eventually erupt in violence, and I urge the community to make sure violence doesn’t happen.”

Abortion rights supporters were predominant in the 50 to 75 people gathered outside the clinic Friday morning.

“Welcome, welcome, this clinic stays open,” some shouted when cars pulled into the clinic’s driveway.

Newman said earlier, “I’m not interested in putting our folks in any situation where the other side might flare up. I’m very confident about our side. They’re very peaceful moms and dads and families that will be showing up with signs.”

He said he abhorred the killing of Tiller.

“Shooting someone in the head in a church,” he said, “is not a pro-life act. Sorry, it doesn’t qualify.”

Scott Roeder, a 51-year-old anti-abortion activist, is charged in Tiller’s killing. He has pleaded not guilty.

Newman said he wants Carhart shut down — through legal means. He said he was confident his organization would have shut down Tiller this summer through a legal battle.

“I vehemently disagreed with what Mr. Tiller did, as well as all abortionists for what they do. But they’re still human beings, and they deserve due process,” Newman said.

Tiller was one of about a dozen U.S. doctors who performed late-term abortions. In the wake of his death, his family decided to close his clinic permanently.

Carhart was a close friend and understudy of Tiller’s. He performed abortions at Tiller’s clinic for a week every month, including late-term procedures.

Carhart has vowed to open an office in Kansas and said he’ll keep doing abortions as long as he’s healthy. He said he’s performed more than 60,000 abortions in the past two decades. About 400 of those were after 24 weeks, he said.

Staring across the room at a poster of Tiller, he said, “I don’t want his death to be in vain. He spent his whole life trying to ensure better health care for women.”

Carhart was performing an abortion in his clinic when Tiller was killed that Sunday morning.

He learned of the news by phone from Tiller’s head nurse. “That’s when she told me that George had been shot in church and that he was dead.”

Carhart is unlike many abortion doctors. He’s doesn’t parse his words about his profession. The outside of his office has the name of his clinic in bold letters: Abortion & Contraception Clinic of Nebraska. He said he takes pride in the term abortionist.

“I do abortions, and that is what I do,” he said.

On Friday, Carhart teared up when talking about the abortion rights supporters outside his clinic.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said of the support.

Mark Gietzen, the driver of a truck for Operation Rescue, beamed with pride ahead of the protests. He stood outside his truck in Wichita adorned with a poster showing the dismembered hand of a fetus on a quarter. Across the top of the van, it reads, “Abortion is an ObamaNation.com.”

He said he knew Tiller “quite well” from the vantage point of a peaceful common enemy over the years and said the killing was a setback for “pro-lifers.”

He’s only had one encounter with Carhart — when the doctor drove his car by protesters and “quacked like a duck.”

Carhart acknowledges he might’ve done that.

Gietzen’s message to Carhart: “Please respect the life of the babies. Stop the killing, stop committing such a horrible act for money.”

Newman, the head of Operation Rescue, said he’ll keep praying Carhart “turns back to the healing arts and not taking babies’ lives.”

Carhart remains unmoved. “When they’re ready to accept our position, then we’ll sit down. We say choice is right. If you don’t want to have an abortion, don’t have one.”

Here in America’s heartland, a battle is being waged and both sides are entrenched. There is no middle ground

Opposing groups protest outside abortion doctor’s clinic

August 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

A woman walked slowly toward the door of the abortion clinic when a nearby protester screamed, “Don’t kill your baby!”

About 100 women's rights supporters were on hand Saturday outside an abortion clinic in Bellevue, Nebraska.

But the shouts on this day were drowned out by women’s rights groups who gathered at the Abortion & Contraception Clinic of Nebraska in Bellevue, just south of Omaha.

“Welcome! Welcome! This clinic stays open,” abortion supporters chanted in unison, their voices rising every time anti-abortion activists tried to shout at patients arriving at the clinic.

Anti-abortion groups, led by Operation Rescue, and supporters of abortion rights rallied Saturday outside the clinic operated by LeRoy Carhart, one of the nation’s few remaining doctors who perform late-term abortions. Carhart was best friends with George Tiller, one of the world’s most well-known doctors performing abortions.

Tiller was shot in the head at point-blank range on May 31 as services began at Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita, Kansas. Scott Roeder, a 51-year-old anti-abortion activist, is charged in Tiller’s killing. He has pleaded not guilty.

The rally in Bellevue came nearly three months to the day after Tiller’s killing. A massive police presence, including heavily armed rapid-response teams, monitored the demonstrators. Streets were blocked off, and police kept both sides separated with buffer zones in between.

Abortion rights supporters outnumbered their opponents nearly 2 to 1.

Operation Rescue drove in two of their so-called Truth Trucks, delivery trucks with giant billboards of dismembered fetuses on the sides. The vehicles parked in a designated area outside the clinic to gasps from the women’s rights groups. Police used sniffer dogs to make sure the vehicles did not have any explosives before allowing them to park.

Megan Belleavia called the trucks abortion “pornography” that shouldn’t be allowed. “You can’t stand out in the street corner and show pictures of a bare-breasted woman without getting in trouble, so why should they be able to show that?” she said.

About 50 anti-abortion demonstrators prayed near the trucks, asking God to forgive what was happening inside the clinic. One woman held a sign that said, ” I like to listen to my Mommy’s voice.” About 10 people stood with red tape over their mouths, with the word “Life” written across it.

Mike Whitaker said the tape symbolized “the silent cry that the babies have when they’re actually being killed in there.”

As he spoke, about a dozen abortion-rights supporters stood on the clinic property, their backs to those who oppose abortions. “A woman has a right to choose,” they sang.

“A lot of towns will have things that stick out, positive things. This is something that’s really a negative, a huge negative, for the city to have an abortion clinic here,” said Whitaker, a 30-year resident of Bellevue.

Whitaker said he comes nearly every Saturday to pray for Carhart and those inside.

Larry Donlan of Rescue the Heartland said, “What we’re doing today is what we do every day that this killing center is open. We’re here to give assistance to mothers and pray for the dead and the wounded,” Donlan said.

In all, about 100 women’s rights supporters were on hand, spread out over the clinic property and near its entrance. Dozens gathered along a main street holding signs that read “Dr. Carhart is a hero” and “Keep abortion legal.” When passing cars honked at them, they responded with loud hurrahs.

Michelle Fadeley drove from the Chicago area to support Carhart. “Someone who is willing to put his own life on the line to save thousands of other women’s lives is truly a hero,” said Fadeley, who works for a local Illinois chapter of the National Organization for Women.

Anthony Hardwick of Omaha clutched a sign that read “Women are not an incubator.”

“What it means to me is that women are not solely for the purpose of procreation. They’re not little vessels for men to plant their seeds in,” he said.

Supporters of women’s rights groups spread the word ahead of Saturday’s demonstration that Operation Rescue was coming to protest outside Carhart’s clinic. In the wake of the killing of Tiller, they said they wanted to show up in large numbers; supporters from at least 16 states were present Saturday.

Troy Newman, the president of Operation Rescue, was unfazed by it all. He has pledged to try to shut down Carhart’s clinic.

Operation Rescue and other anti-abortion groups have asked Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning to investigate the clinic, alleging it has “an unacceptable safety risk to women.”

Bruning has referred the matter to the state Department of Health and Human Services. A spokeswoman for the health department would only say they’re looking into the matter and that Carhart’s clinic has been in compliance with the law in previous inspections over the last decade.

“This is the beginning, not the end,” Newman said outside the clinic. “All these NOW women will go home tomorrow, but we’re going to be embedded here in the community.”

Inside, Carhart continued to perform abortions

It looks like Nadya Suleman is making good on her vow to go back to college so that she can better support her family.  The mother of fourteen was spotted Friday checking out a college.

Octo-Mom: The Incredible Unseen Footage
– compiled primarily from exclusive RadarOnline.com video — aired on Fox-TV earlier this month, and Nadya later said she was “shocked” at how she came across.

She’s hoping a better education will land her a career capable of keeping her children well-fed, housed and dressed.

Octo-Mom Nadya Suleman “Relieved” She Will Not Face Social Services Investigation

In an exclusive interview with RadarOnline.com, Octo-Mom Nadya Suleman says she is “relieved” that she will not be facing an investigation by Child Protective Services.

“I’m relieved that CPS won’t be investigating or interfering in my life,” Suleman told RadarOnline.com exclusively. “I don’t have anything to hide and I appreciate their concern, but I simply don’t understand why it was ever considered necessary.”

On Wednesday, a California appeals court ruled to halt the investigation that was ordered by an Orange County Superior Court probate judge.

The appeals court also ruled earlier this month that Suleman would not have to have a court-appointed guardian to oversee her children’s finances.

Paul Petersen
, an advocate for the fair treatment of  children in show business, had filed a petition requesting the appointment of an independent guardian. Nadya then filed a motion challenging his right to file the petition.

“I don’t know Petersen and I don’t know his family,” Suleman told RadarOnline.com. “I am already providing for my family to the best of my abilities.

“Presently, this statute allows anyone from off the street to interfere with how a family raises its children. I never want what’s happened to me to happen to another family. For now,  at least, it seems as if the appellate court agrees with us.”

On Thursday, Petersen’s attorney, Gloria Allred, released the following statement: “Our goal in filing this petition on behalf of Paul Petersen has been and continues to be to protect Nadya Suleman’s octuplets. The Court of Appeals has now issued a temporary stay of the investigation until this matter is decided by them. The Appellate Court has invited us to reply and we will soon be filing our brief and argument on this issue with them. My co-counsel, John Deily, and I will continue to do everything possible to assure that the interests of the octuplets are protected, because these babies are unable to protect themselves.”
