Foods to boost your mood

April 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Chocolate cake is a popular home remedy for depression, but it comes with some unwelcome side effects. Sweet treats don’t just pack on the pounds; they give us a sugar high that’s inevitably followed by a demoralizing crash

Still, there’s growing recognition in the medical community that the right food choices can improve your mood. Though drugs are often considered the first line of treatment for depression, a dietary change might be all you need, says James Gordon, a psychiatrist who advocates nondrug approaches to depression.

Gordon, a clinical professor at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, says what we eat affects how we think and feel. “It’s a wake-up call to let us know our body is out of balance.”

Food can help restore that equilibrium, Gordon wrote in his book, “Unstuck” (Penguin Press). The trick is knowing which key nutrients to include, and which foods to avoid.

Nutritional changes aren’t a magic bullet; they’re pieces of a treatment plan that might also include therapy, exercise — one of the most effective depression busters — and stress-reduction techniques.

But “diet can help with virtually any chronic condition” including depression, said registered dietitian Wendy Bazilian. Just remember that major depression might require an approach that uses food with other therapies, including medication and counseling. And never abruptly stop taking medication even if you’re experiencing side effects such as weight gain and sexual dysfunction; talk to your doctor about tapering down.

Obstacles when I become a parent

April 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I know that once I adopt a child it will be difficult for a few reasons.I don’t believe in driving all over the place. It’s not the fact I have seizures but the reason I don’t believe in driving is that when you buy a car then you will have to pay car insurance.Likewise,if you get into an accident you will not only have to face higher rates but also to pay attorney if a driver takes you to court.I wasn’t about to risk all of that when I can have a cab, walk or take a bus.I noticed that people when they are in escaltors that they just stay on one step till it’s time to get off at the top of the steps.I mean God gave us legs to use so why not use it and not be lazy.Don’t just stand there.Walk it up if no one is in front of you or it’s not crowded with people. Instead of taking stairs people use elevators. Why not walk it up?That’s truly why I believe some people are so lazy in life…..

Pandemic ‘Imminent’: WHO Raises Swine Flu Pandemic Alert Level to 5 World Health Organization Urges Governments to Prepare for Pandemic

April 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The move by agency, which is the public health arm of the United Nations, is “a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent,” according to published guidelines.

“The change to a higher phase of alert is a signal to governments [and industry] that certain actions now should be undertaken with increased urgency and at an accelerated pace,” said Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO’s director-general, at a press conference Wednesday.

“The biggest question is this — how severe will the pandemic be, especially now at the start,” Chan said. “It really is all of humanity that is under threat during a pandemic.”

Practically speaking, the shift is crucial to mobilize pharmaceutical companies and governments to start manufacturing adequate antiviral drugs and expedite the creation of a vaccine against swine flu.

It also places the world a single step away from an official global pandemic.

President Barack Obama pledged “great vigilance” in confronting the swine flu outbreak Wednesday night as it spread coast to coast across the U.S.

Despite calls from many U.S. lawmakers for tightening controls over the Mexico-US border, Obama ruled out that option, even though the swine flu outbreak has been at its most virulent and may have begun there. We have been preparing all along as if this is going to be stage 6,” Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano said at a press conference this afternoon before the WHO announcement. “Our efforts have been to stay ahead of whatever number WHO assigns.”

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said at the same conference that the change in designation should not inspire undue worry.

“Panicking is probably not very helpful,” she said. “What’s helpful is turning this concern and worry into action steps.”

In the United States, the swine flu virus has spread to 11 states and infected 94 people, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Appoximately 160,400 children across fourteen states will stay home from school on Thursday.

Five more states — Arizona, Michigan, Mass., Nevada and Maine – each now have at least one confirmed case.

The latest state to report infections is Maine, with three new cases, according to Gov. John Baldacci, who says all those stricken are at home recovering .

In addition to the Maine, Richard Besser, acting director of the CDC, said there were now 51 cases in New York; 16 cases in Texas; 14 cases in California; two cases each in Massachusetts, Michigan and Kansas; and single cases in Arizona, Nevada, Indiana and Ohio.

The CDC has not officially added the Maine infections to their totals, which stand at 91 confirmed cases.

The announcements came on the same day that federal health officials reported the swine flu death of a 22-month-old baby boy in Texas — the first known U.S. fatality from the outbreak.

The baby, who died at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston Monday, was from Mexico and was in the United States to visit family in nearby Brownsville, Texas, officials said. The death is the first linked to swine flu to occur outside of Mexico.

“This is obviously a serious situation,” said President Obama of the developments today. He further urged local health departments to watch for new cases — and for schools to “strongly consider” closing their doors if the virus is suspected or detected among students or staff.

Schools Close Around Country

The first U.S. swine flu fatality and 16 confirmed swine flu cases in Texas have sent shockwaves through local communities. Schools closed their doors as a precaution, keeping nearly 53,000 students in Texas home today.

“This is nothing to panic over, but there are precautions we need to follow to prevent the spread of this illness,” Cleburne Mayor Ted Reynolds said.

Every high school sporting event and most extracurricular activities throughout the state have been postponed until the middle of May as a result of the outbreak.

“I’d rather be inconvenienced than have these kids sick and contaminating everybody,” said Jane Stone Pritzkaw, parent from New Branufels, Texas, where there is one confirmed case in the district.

Schools across the country — from Connecticut to San Francisco — followed suit. In Chicago, officials closed a school on the city’s North Side after a “probable” swine flu infection was reported Tuesday. Blood samples are being sent to the CDC for analysis. If confirmed, Illinois would become the 12th state to report an outbreak.

Germany and Austria today became the latest countries to confirm swine flu infections.

The Egyptian government has begun slaughtering all 300,000 pigs in the country, according to local reports. No swine flu cases have yet been confirmed on the country, though its neighbor Israel has reported two. And EU foreign relations commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner told Reuters during a Gulf Arab foreign ministers’ meeting in Muscat on Wednesday that the bloc was considering halting all travel to Mexico and disinfecting all airports due to the outbreak.

Governments around the world are struggling to contain the disease, but no one is ready yet to call the outbreak a full fledged pandemic.

“It’s a very serious possibility, but it is still too early to say that this is inevitable,” the World Health Organization flu chief, Dr. Keiji Fukuda, told reporters today.

Nine countries have officially reported 148 cases of swine influenza, According to WHO.

Swine Flu Death Reinforces CDC’s Prior Warnings

The death comes as public fears over swine flu continue to grow. Before this fatality, health officials confirmed Tuesday that five patients in the United States have been hospitalized with swine flu; all have recovered.

And last night, a flight from Baltimore to Mexico was, for a time, suspected of carrying a passenger with swine flu. The airport had prepared to quarantine the plane before authorities said the concern was unwarranted.

Both the Obama administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been warning for days that American deaths should be expected from swine flu.

“I think what the American people need to be confident of is that President Obama, the Department of Homeland Security and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta are being very aggressive in tackling the problem,” Valerie Jarrett, senior White House adviser, told “Good Morning America” today.

“We were unfortunately expecting that there would be deaths, but we’re working really hard to educate the American people so that we take reasonable precautions.”

The White House has already requested a billion and a half dollars to fight the growing outbreak.

Meanwhile, Mexico’s Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova said on Tuesday night that more than 1,300 people were in hospitals, some of them “seriously” ill, out of a total of around 2,500 suspected cases of the virus.

“In the last few days there has been a decline (in cases),” Cordova told a news conference. “The death figures have remained more or less stable.”

Cordova said the victims ranged from children through young adults and middle-aged people to the elderly, a different pattern to the common seasonal flu that mainly kills the elderly and already unwell people.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said today three more cases of the flu have been confirmed, for a total of five known cases.

After Mexico, U.S. Is Hardest Hit

In the U.S., the outbreak has escalated, with the total number of cases confirmed in the United States jumping to 91 and spreading to more states, health officials said

“I do expect more cases and expect more states to be affected,” Rear Admiral Dr. Anne Schuchat, interim deputy director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s science and public health program, told a Senate hearing today. “I think we need to be prepared that even if it starts to look a little better, it may get a little worse.”

The CDC has been working to distribute test kits for the virus, identified only last week in the country. Without the kits, confirming infection can take days. To fight the epidemic, the Obama administration is asking Congress for $1.5 billion. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said the president was requesting the funds “out of an abundance of caution” to “enhance our nation’s capability to respond to the potential spread of this outbreak.”

The government’s request underscores how seriously U.S. officials are treating the threat. Alarmed by the growing number of swine flu cases and the possibility that a California man may have died from the disease, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency today to help deal with the outbreak.

California has confirmed 15 cases of swine flu, and Tuesday it was investigating whether one man may have died as a result of the virus. According to Los Angeles County public health official Jonathan Fielding, the case is still being investigated. If it is confirmed, it would be the second death in the U.S. attributed to the illness.

Besser declined to comment on the California investigation, but said, “I fully expect we will see deaths from this infection.”

Florida has reported an incidence of swine flu today, and Indiana health officials confirmed this afternoon that a student at Notre Dame has swine flu. These developments bring to seven the number of states where the infections are being investigated.

adsonar_placementId=1280601;adsonar_pid=42750;adsonar_ps=-1;adsonar_zw=165;adsonar_zh=220;adsonar_jv=’ads.adsonar.com’;

In Orlando, Fla., the chief medical officer at Florida Hospital Loran Hauck indicated the flu has spread to a tourist who visiting the crowded Disney World.

“A case was diagnosed here in Orlando today on a tourist from Mexico who came to Disney attractions two days ago to visit,” Hauck wrote in the email. Florida health officials have not confirmed that the tourist was stricken with swine flu.

The outbreak is expected to keep growing because the CDC said today the new count includes “a number of hospitalizations.”

The CDC in Atlanta has become the center for the swine flu investigation. It is one of only four laboratories in the world that have the expertise to unravel a novel flu strain.

“What we’re trying to do is to identify how bad, how good, the swine flu is currently operating — is it expanding, is it contracting, is it maintaining a steady state,” said Phillip Navin, director of the Division of Emergency Operations at the CDC.

With the uptick in cases, the CDC shipped out more anti-virals and sent additional teams into the field.

“I think at the moment we need to be looking forward and making sure that we’re doing everything that we can to keep people from getting sick,” said Dr. Steve Reed, director of the CDC’s Influeza Coordination Unit.

New York City Sees Big Jump in Swine Flu Cases

The biggest increase occurred in New York City where the number of cases leaped from 28 to 45, the CDC said.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday the cases were confined to a “single cluster,” students of St. Francis Preparatory School and their relatives. Several of the students had spent spring break in Cancun, Mexico, which health officials suspect is the origin of the outbreak.

But Bloomberg said Tuesday that it appears to have spread to at least one other school, Public School 177, a school for autistic children. Of PS 177’s 380 students, 82 called in sick today and at least a dozen have fevers. One of those students has two siblings at St. Francis Prep, Bloomberg said. Both of the those schools are located in the borough of Queens.

The mayor also said there are six possible cases of the flu in a Manattan school, Ascension parochial school.

And New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden said today that “many hundreds” of students and teachers at St. Francis are sick — though most of those cases appear mild so far.

“It is here and it is spreading,” Frieden said. “We do not know whether it will continue to spread.”

At one point the Ernst and Young corporation said it had confirmed a case at its Manhattan headquarters, but later retracted the statement.

In addition, there were four more cases in Texas and three additional cases in California.

Leaders in Congress raced each other to hold hearings on the outbreak. Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa, chairman of the Senate appropriations subcommittee that deals with pandemic preparedness, called an emergency hearing to address funding for states and federal government

Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., called another hearing for Wednesday and Rep. Henry Waxman, D- Calif., the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee called for a hearing on Thursday.

Concern among travelers was so great that Carnival Cruises Tuesday suspended its stops at Mexican ports because of its concerns about swine flu.

Around the world, New Zealand confirmed 11 cases, and Israel confirmed one Tuesday. South Korea, Australia and the Czech Republic announced several suspected cases.

A South Korean Catholic nun traveling in Mexico has tested positive for swine flu, according to reporting by ABC’s Joohee Cho. South Korean authorities believe the 51-year-old woman caught the disease from a taxi driver and have requesting the Mexican government look into the matter.

Ten countries have restricted their imports of U.S. pork or swine, including Russia, China, Philippines, Thailand, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates and Ecuador.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said pork, soybean and corn prices had fallen in the last two days and criticized what he said were illogical restrictions on pork.

Officials Fighting Swine Flu Learned Lessons From SARS

Korean health authorities are examining 315 other passengers that were on the same flight with the nun and have already injected Tamiflu into eight passengers who sat near her. Spain had one previously confirmed case, the United Kingdom, two and Canada, six. France is still testing some people and some test results in Germany came back negative.

Most of the individuals involved had recently returned from Mexico.

To slow the global spread of the virus, the U.S. State Department and the European Union’s health commissioner recommended avoiding nonessential travel to Mexico.

Russia, Hong Kong and Taiwan said they would quarantine visitors showing symptoms of the virus amid global concern about a possible pandemic, which means a prevalent and rapidly spreading disease over a large region.

Singapore’s Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew told the Straits Times that Singaporeans returning from Mexico would be quarantined.

Argentina also installed airport heat sensors and suspended flights from Mexico, as did Cuba.

But Gregory Hartl, a World Health Organization spokesman, told reporters that it did not recommend border closure or travel restrictions as a countermeasure.

He noted that infected people may not show symptoms at the airport or when they reach a border crossing. “Certainly, if you feel that you are ill, you should not travel, in any case, to anywhere,” Hartl said.

Lessons learned from the SARS (a viral respiratory disease) outbreak in Asia in 2003 showed that border closure was economically disruptive and not particularly effective. “In public health terms, it didn’t work, so we don’t want to repeat something that didn’t work” Hartl said.

adsonar_placementId=1280601;adsonar_pid=42750;adsonar_ps=-1;adsonar_zw=165;adsonar_zh=220;adsonar_jv=’ads.adsonar.com’;

But governments in Asia were not taking any chances. Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines dusted off thermal scanners used in the SARS crisis as they checked for signs of fever among passengers from North America.

South Korea and Indonesia introduced similar screening. In Malaysia, health workers in face masks took the temperatures of passengers as they arrived on a flight from Los Angeles.

China said anyone experiencing flulike symptoms within two weeks of arrival had to report to authorities.

India will start screening people arriving from Mexico, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Spain, Britain and France for flulike symptoms, said Vineet Chawdhry, a top health ministry official. It also will contact people who have arrived from Mexico and other affected countries in the past 10 days to check for the symptoms, he said.

These measures came after the World Health Organization announced that it had raised its pandemic alert level to Phase 4 from Phase 3, the first time the alert level has been raised above 3 since the system was adopted in 2005.

The Phase 4 designation signifies that the new swine flu virus can cause sustained outbreaks and is adapting itself to spread among humans, significant steps toward a pandemic. But the ranking does not necessarily mean that a pandemic is a foregone conclusion.

“If the virus is an efficient virus, if it spreads easily from human to human, it will probably continue to spread,” Hartl said.

All transmission of the disease so far appears to have been human to human and not from animal or other contact, according to the WHO. “There is no danger from eating pork,” Hartl said. “If you cook pork well, if you cook all meat well, it kills all virus.”

Nokia to cut 450 jobs worldwide

April 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Nokia, the world’s leading mobile phone maker, said Tuesday it planned to cut some 450 jobs globally as it reorganises its services unit.

In addition, Nokia plans to streamline its corporate development office, including internal information technology (IT) and industry collaboration activities.

“Altogether, approximately 450 employees globally will be impacted by the plans announced today, of which a maximum of 100 in Finland, the company said in a statement.

It added it would continue to seek savings across the company, which had 124,000 employees at the end of March, or 64,000 excluding its Nokia Siemens Networks joint venture.

The job cuts “will impact mainly employees in Europe and North America, but it is too early to be more precise,” Nokia’s spokeswoman Eija-Riitta Huovinen told AFP.

Nokia’s services unit develops Internet based services to mobile phone users, including map services and games. The unit currently employs some 3,200 people.

The head of Nokia services, Niklas Savander, said Nokia would increasingly offer to its customers new services developed by its partners and other companies.

Prior to Tuesday’s announcement, Nokia had announced more than 3,000 job cuts since January as part of a vast cost-cutting plan, including 1,000 voluntary departure packages.

The Finnish firm launched the programme last January, aimed at creating more than 700 million euros (910 million dollars) in annual savings.

Earlier this month Nokia reported a 90-percent drop in its first-quarter net profit to 122 million euros. Its earnings were dented by fewer consumers buying cheaper mobile phones amid global financial crisis.

Nokia’s chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said at the time that “it is too early to say that end-consumer demand has hit the bottom” although there were some signs of improving market conditions.

Epileptic drug calms restless legs, improves sleep

April 30, 2009 · 1 Comment

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – The anti-seizure drug pregabalin (Lyrica) appears to help patients with restless legs syndrome get a better night’s sleep. That’s according to the findings of a clinical trial presented today at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology.

Pregabalin, which is approved for the treatment epilepsy, neuropathic pain, generalized anxiety and fibromyalgia, was well tolerated by patients with restless legs syndrome and “is a promising alternative to current treatments because of its superior effects on quality of sleep,” Dr. Diego Garcia-Borreguero, director of the Sleep Research Institute in Madrid, Spain, noted in a meeting statement.

The study involved 58 patients with restless legs syndrome of unknown origin. After 2 weeks on a placebo, 30 patients were assigned to receive pregabalin (150 to 600 milligrams daily) and 28 remained on the placebo for 12 weeks. Restless legs syndrome severity was determined periodically using the International Restless Legs Syndrome Rating Scale, as well as other disease severity measures; sleep studies were performed at the beginning of the study and again after 12 weeks.

According to Garcia-Borreguero and colleagues, the change in International Restless Legs Syndrome Rating Scale scores was significantly “more pronounced” with pregabalin than with placebo. With pregabalin, scores on this disease severity index declined from 19.8 to 6.8; with placebo, scores declined from 21.5 to 11.2.

Similar findings were obtained with other disease severity assessments, according to the investigators.

In addition, 63.3 percent of pregabalin-treated patients had remission of restless legs syndrome symptoms while taking the drug, at an average daily dose of 337 milligrams. In comparison, only 28.6 percent of placebo-treated patients achieved remission.

Pregabalin treatment also improved the sleep patterns in restless legs syndrome patients, who had a significant increase in time spent in deep slow wave Stage 3 sleep and a decrease in time spent in lighter stage 1 or 2 sleep, compared with the patients on placebo.

Due to its superior therapeutic effects on sleep, Garcia-Borreguero and colleagues conclude, pregabalin is a promising alternative to current drug treatments for restless legs syndrome.

U.S. cancer diagnoses will jump 45 percent by 2030

April 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

CHICAGO (Reuters) – The number of new cancer cases diagnosed each year will jump 45 percent in the next two decades to 2.3 million up from 1.6 million in 2010, affecting many more older adults and minorities, U.S. researchers predicted on Wednesday.

Using demographic trends, researchers at the University of Texas project a 67 percent increase in the number of adults 65 and older will be diagnosed with cancer in 2030, rising to 1.6 million in 2030 from 1 million in 2010.

And they foresee a doubling in the number of non-whites who will be diagnosed with cancer by then, rising to 660,000 cases a year from 330,000.

The data assume that rates of cancer would remain about the same. “This is basically saying how will our population changes impact the number of people getting cancer,” Dr. Ben Smith of the university’s M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, said in a telephone interview.

“In 2030, 70 percent of all cancers will be diagnosed in the elderly and 28 percent in minorities, and the number of older adults diagnosed with cancer will be the same as the total number of Americans diagnosed with cancer in 2010,” he said.

Smith said that the number and types of cancers expected to increase — such as liver, stomach and pancreas — are especially deadly.

“Currently, we don’t have the health care infrastructure to be able to accommodate the expected surge in cancer diagnoses,” Smith, whose findings appear in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, said in a telephone interview.

He pointed to data from the American Society of Clinical Oncology that suggests 40 percent of cancer specialists in the United States are 55 and older and many will retire in the next decade or so.

“The rate of new oncologists is not sufficient to keep pace with the rate of retirement,” Smith said, adding that by 2030, there will be a shortage of 3,800 oncologists. “That is a great concern.”

SHIFT IN DISEASE

For the study, Smith and his team used current the United States Census Bureau statistics and cancer incidence rates to look at how changes in the population will affect the number of people getting cancer.

He found a major shift in new cancers being diagnosed in older adults and minorities — segments of the population projected to grow rapidly.

“Both older adults and minorities are segments of the patient population that are particularly vulnerable to receiving sub-optimal medical care,” Smith said.

He said minorities are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer at a later stage, and death rates, especially for black Americans, are significantly higher compared to white Americans.

Given these statistics, Smith said, screening and prevention become all the more vital.

Cancer remains the No. 2 killer of Americans, with about 560,000 deaths annually, topped only by heart disease.

Loreen’s family life

April 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Tonight I went to see my grandpa. He was sleepy and not fully awake but being with him just made me feel a lot better.Couple things interestingly happend of what some of my family members said. One of them wants to get eyelid surgery via plastic surgerery.Personally even if the bible doesn’t condemn it there would be no way I would ever do that let alone get a tattoo.I don’t even go for men with tattoos. It just really throws meoff and looks so ugly to be with a man with a tattoos.=One reason: Leviticus 19:28 You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the LORD

Second thing was that my family didn’t want to live long like my grandpa. Also mentioning that he is stubborn and hard headed not making the right decisions.Others said that emotions get in your way. My reasoning:No,it doesn’t.Let’s say I was in the USA and my brother went to I don’t know maybe to Japan and my parents were in a bind and got into an accident of life and death with only 20% survivial to even make a full recovery and ended up dead then what would I do?I’d say take them off life support, and no feeding tubes or anything of prolonging their life. What if the options were hospice or nursing home in the event they get better but not long?I’d say hospice.THing is I always make my voice heard and clear loudly and I almost always get what I want roughly speaking 95% out of 100%.An ex:My parents at one point said I’d never get out of placements.Well,it went right back in their face.I was out.I still am.Thought I couldn’t do it.I did it alright.I told my parents I think next time I go for surgery in the hospital I will write up a living will.My dad goes for what?I said what do you mean for what?My dad says what do you need surgery for?I replied tubal ligation.Did you guys forget that I said I wasn’t going to ever get pregnant again. Not with the DNA my family history holds. The way they raised me and I giving them hell.I said there is no way I will go through hell like you did with me. And so I told them One pregnancy was enough, one abortion was enough.TO go through hell like my parents’ did with me?Never on my life line. You will never even see me reconsider to reverse tubal ligation.DO you know how much that costs?Over 5,000 dollars.I love children but I’ll adopt. To put it lightly the insurance plan I am going to consider for California has no maternity services whatsoever.I chose that one because I specifically have no desire of conciveing a child again.I would love to adopt and raise a child in the most dedicated loving parent they could find. Not ending up spoiled, celebrity child with photographers in their face but to be raised in a true natrual christian living environment and education to say the very least.

Attention Hawaii residents!HB 444 is not a done deal and we need your help!

April 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

There are a couple stories and blogs I wanted to share and as alert as I have been with this bill I am not going to give up without a fighting battle.Kind of like war.

1)Savvy senators could resurrect civil unions bill

Over the past few weeks, increasing numbers of Hawaii voters have been dismayed to hear state senators offer a series of transparent excuses for failing to bring to the Senate floor for a vote the bill authorizing civil unions for same-sex couples.

First, the Senate claimed that recalling the bill from committee would violate Senate “procedures.” By Senate “procedures,” they mean Senate Rule 22(2): “A favorable vote of a majority of the members present at a decision-making meeting duly constituted with a quorum is required to report a matter out of committee.”

However, Senate Rule 52 (the “Recall Rule”) also is a Senate “procedure.” The Recall Rule specifically provides that, “[t]wenty days after a bill has been referred to a committee, the same may be recalled from such committee by the affirmative vote of one-third of the members of the Senate.”

The Recall Rule has been invoked many times. However, in 2009 senators refused to use the Recall Rule to pull, from the Judiciary Committee, a civil unions bill, which provides necessary and essential protections for same-sex couples.

Second, Senate President Colleen Hanabusa tried to convince senators that if HB444 passes, the Hawaii Supreme Court will hold it unconstitutional because HB444 uses the term “civil unions” rather than “marriage.” She cited a Connecticut court case (Kerrigan). However, various professors from the University of Hawaii Law School advised the senators that this argument lacks legal merit, because the Connecticut Constitution on which the Kerrigan case is based is different from the Hawaii Constitution

Third, proponents were told that the bill would have a better chance of passing if it was amended to make it more distinct from marriage. Proponents created an amendment, which many senators liked, but the Senate refused to consider or vote on the amendment.

Fourth, after the second decking deadline passed, leadership claimed HB444 was dead. However, decking applies only if a bill is amended. HB444 can be passed without amendment until the last day of session. There are many Senate “procedures” that could be used to honor the constitution’s requirement for equal protection. The Senate president can refer the bill to the Committee of the Whole, appoint additional members to the Judiciary Committee, and waive deadlines. The chair of the Judiciary Committee can waive the bill to floor. Nine or more senators can recall bill. The Senate can even amend or suspend its rules by a majority vote.

The latest illusory promise is that the Senate will pass the bill early next year — in an election year. Who are they kidding? Passing a controversial bill in an election year is as likely as inheriting $28 million through the Internet.

Process should be used to promote justice, not deny it.

Eighteen senators claim to support civil unions. Yet three senators keep them from expressing that support: Sens. Sam Slom, Mike Gabbard and Robert Bunda hold the bill hostage in the Judiciary Committee while every day families headed by same-sex couples suffer the indignity and uncertainty of inequality. The Senate should support equal.

3)–The blog–

I have lived in Hawaii my entire life and I have never before seen our state legislature generate the level of buzz and controversy that has surfaced with the recent civil unions bill, House Bill 444. Over 1400 people submitted testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which resulted in the absolute longest and perhaps most impassioned hearing in state history. This is absolutely incredible for a state that has consistently ranked among the lowest in voter turnout and political participation. Any issue that can attract locals to the State Capitol instead of the beach in such unprecedented numbers is worth considerable focus.  I think it goes without saying that this issue has become a hot topic this year not only in Hawaii, but on the national stage as well with the decisions in Iowa and Vermont legalizing same sex marriage.

I send this email not to preach, but to politely request that you not side-line this issue, which has been nothing short of phenomenal in regards to encouraging political participation. Regardless of where your personal views may lie, it’s impossible to deny the positive influence this discussion has had on involving our people in the democratic process. In following this bill, many of my friends and family have actually learned a lot about how the state legislature works – things they may have never known or cared about were it not for this issue. Getting locals to pay attention to politics is usually like pulling teeth, so you can understand my surprise and excitement in this newfound activism.

I understand that our state faces many important issues this year such as the poor economy and financial/budget crisis. Honolulu’s pending rail system has generated significant buzz as well. However, I must emphasize that without educating and empowering Hawaii’s people in the democratic process, we severely hamper our collective ability to progress as a state and to successfully face future issues. The Civil Unions bill has been among the most powerful and effective tools I have seen in facilitating this education and inspiring folks to participate.

So PLEASE don’t ignore this issue as it is STILL ALIVE!! The Senate still has until MAY 5th2009 to bring HB 444 out of committee. A single senator, Sen. Brian Taniguchi, can make this possible. As a blogger/journalist and one who reaches a significant audience your assistance is absolutely VITAL. If you believe in encouraging people to participate in democracy, please don’t let this issue die a silent death.u can help by circulating (via your blog) this Petition urging Taniguchi to stand up for what he has said he believes in.

There is also an online version of the petition here: http://eqfed.org/campaign/cupetition

We are trying to gather 10,000 signatures by April 30th and already have several thousand. Sorry this is so last-minute but, as they say, “never late than never.”

18 out of the 25 total senators have said they support civil unions. If that is true, why haven’t they passed it yet? Check out this Youtube channel dedicated to the fight for Civil Unions and equality and find out for yourself.

Because of your unique influence, you can help in ways that most can’t. Please help to give the people of Hawaii the equality our diverse state deserves.

5)Proponents of civil unions have submitted petition to the legislature which they claim represents over 7,000 signatures.  Although we collected almost 10,000 signatures at the rally, (and several thousand more by individuals in churches during this whole process) we will collect signatures again.

Another Way to think of Relationships

April 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment

1)Well when two people are serious about each other then it is like a commitment.A commitment is also serious as so is marriage.Because being in a serious relationship is almost like sharaing your whole life with your spous/boyfriend.=Marriage
2)In a marriage/serious commitment there are problems of family problems, cheating, alchol and who knows what else  then people seperate=Seperation
3)Eventually comes the children if any which comes custody of who will get the child, then it comes to payments=Divorce

My mom said I got a good man and I said Don’t count on it.There are a lot of elderly people now getting divorced so I wouldn’t count on it.And that is why I am against marriage.Saves time, saves money.I would rather see people, read about it and laugh about it than put my self in the predicament and making payments over a child
